API 6A vs API 6D Understanding the Two Key Valve Standards in Oil and Gas

Anyone specifying valves for oil and gas will quickly encounter two American Petroleum Institute standards: API 6A and API 6D. They are sometimes confused because both cover gate, ball and check valves, but they apply to entirely different parts of the production chain, with different pressure ratings, materials requirements and testing regimes. Ordering to the wrong standard is an expensive mistake.

API 6A: Wellhead and Christmas Tree Equipment

API Specification 6A (aligned with ISO 10423) covers equipment installed at the wellhead, the valves, flanges and fittings that make up christmas trees and wellhead assemblies. These valves see raw, unprocessed well fluids at the highest pressures in the system.

Key characteristics of API 6A valves include pressure ratings expressed in psi rather than ANSI classes, 2,000, 3,000, 5,000, 10,000, 15,000 and up to 20,000 psi working pressure; material classes (AA through HH) matched to fluid corrosivity, including sour service with H2S per NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156; temperature classifications from −60°F arctic service upward; and Product Specification Levels (PSL 1-4) that escalate quality control, traceability and testing requirements. Ring-type joint (RTJ) flanged connections are standard at higher ratings. Typical API 6A products include expanding and slab gate valves, mud valves, choke valves and RTJ-flanged ball valves.

API 6D: Pipeline and Piping Valves

API Specification 6D (aligned with ISO 14313) covers valves for pipeline transportation systems, the trunk lines, gathering systems and terminals that move oil and gas after it leaves the wellhead. Pressures are lower than at the wellhead, so API 6D valves use the familiar ASME class system (150 through 2500).

API 6D puts particular emphasis on isolation integrity and operational safety: double block and bleed and double isolation and bleed configurations, cavity pressure relief, antistatic devices, fire-safe design (API 607 / API 6FA), full-bore options for pigging, and defined pressure testing including seat testing in both directions. Fully welded body ball valves, through-conduit slab and expanding gate valves, and swing check valves for transmission pipelines are classic API 6D products.

Which Standard Do You Need?

The dividing line is the wellhead. Upstream of it, on the tree, on the casing and tubing heads, in drilling manifolds, specify API 6A with the appropriate PSL, material class and temperature rating. Downstream, in flowlines, gathering systems and transmission pipelines, specify API 6D in the appropriate ASME class. Documentation matters as much as hardware: monogrammed valves come with the material certificates, test reports and traceability your project auditors will ask for.
